Lions Upended by Salem, 20-15

ERIE, Pa. – Michal Izdinsky scored eight goals to lead Salem International past the Penn State Behrend men's water polo team 20-15 on Saturday afternoon at the Junker Center.

Despite two first period goals by Matthew Johnson (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls) the Lions trailed 8-3 after one as the Tigers ended the quarter on a 5-0 run.

Salem increased their lead by four goals over the course of the next two quarters and appeared to be on their way to an easy victory.

But trailing 18-9 entering the final quarter, the Lions staged a rally.

Johnson, Alex Chasar (North Whales, PA/North Penn), and Victor Nguyen (San Jose, CA/Evergreen Valley) scored three consecutive goals to put Behrend within five. In total, the Lions outscored the Tigers 6-2 in the final period.

The five-goal margin, however, would be as close as the Lions would get.

Justin Vink (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) paced Behrend with five goals and Johnson finished with four.

The Lions will take on Mercyhurst on Saturday night at the Junker Center.
