Men's Water Polo Competes at Navy Tournament

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Freshman Grant Garcia (Kingsburg, VA/Kingsburg) scored nine goals to lead the Penn State Behrend men's water polo team at the Navy Tournament over the weekend in Annapolis, Maryland.

In the first game of the tournament, the Lions (0-1) battle Connecticut College to one goal but fell, 6-5. Victor Nguyen (San Jose, CA/Evergreen Valley) tallied three goals to keep Behrend in the running for the win. Connecticut never trailed yet Behrend was on the heels the entire game.

Troy Valkusky (Drifton, PA/Hazelton) had six steals, while Nguyen added two along with Hasan Khan (Lake Zurich, IL/Stevenson). Kyle Frerichs dished out to assists on the six goals and Edwin Doo (Placentia, CA/Valencia), Cameron Makin (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and Khan tallied an assist.

Makin also tallied three goals on the weekend while Valkusky, Justin Spence (Houston, TX/Cy-Fair) and Doo each recorded two goals.

Behrend fell to Diablo Valley 20-5 on Friday night, before falling to Cerritos 20-7 and Iona, 18-7.

Garcia netted a game-high five goals against Iona. The Lions were tight with Cerritos and Iona after the first quarter. Behrend was down 4-2 against Iona and 3-2 in the game against Cerritos. Both teams managed to pull away in the remaining three quarters.

Goalie Ty Elder (Brentwood, CA/Heritage) made six saves against Diablo Valley and then tallied five stops against Iona.

The Lions return to action on Saturday against Bucknell at the Bison Invitational. Game begins at 12:45 p.m.
