Lions Compete at Gary Troyer Tournament

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Penn State Behrend men's water polo team traveled to the west coast to compete in the Gary Troyer Tournament this weekend. They dropped a 20-5 decision to Cal Lutheran Thursday and fell to Occidental and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 12-8 and 18-4 respectively in the first two games of the tournament Friday.

In the Lion's pre-tournament match at Cal Lutheran, goal scoring was hard to come by. The Kingsmen came out firing to take an 8-0 lead in the first quarter. The Lions settled down and kept the second half close, holding Cal Lutheran to only two goals.

Cameron Makin (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and Grant Garcia (Kingsburg, CA/Kingsburg) scored goals for Behrend in the second to cut into the Kingsmen's lead.

Edwin Doo had a game-high two goals for the Lions notching one in the third and fourth quarter. Justin Spence (Houston, TX/Cy-Fair) also put himself on the scoresheet with a goal in the fourth.

Doo continued his goal scoring on Friday to put Behrend on the score board 45 seconds into their game against Occidental. The Tigers quickly answered, scoring the next seven goals of the game to take a 7-1 lead. Behrend battled back to cut Occidental's lead to three.

Two goals apiece by Garcia, Victor Nguyen (San Jose, CA/Evergreen Valley) and a tally from Troy Valkusky (Drifton, PA/Hazelton) made it a 9-6 game. The comeback was cut short however, when the Tigers scored three of the next four goals to clinch the victory in a very close match.

Ty Elder (Brentwood, CA/Heritage) led the Lions with three assists while goaltender Andrew Lockwood (Orlando, FL/Lake Nova) made nine saves to keep Behrend in the game.

Claremont was the Lion's second match of the day on Friday where they fell 18-4. Garcia scored three of Behrend's four goals to lead the team. Doo also tallied his fourth goal of the weekend when he scored the only Lion goal in the second quarter.

Behrend is back in action tomorrow to take on Chapman at 1:15 p.m. and Cal Tech at 5:20 p.m.
