Garcia, Lockwood Named to CWPA DIII All-Tournament Team

NEW LONDON, Ct. – The Penn State Behrend men's water polo team fell to Monmouth 14-6 in their final game of the CWPA Division III Championship on Sunday morning.

The Lions took on the Fighting Scots for the second time this season in the third game of the DIII Championship. Two weeks ago, Monmouth defeated Behrend 14-11 in a very close game.

In this rematch, the Fighting Scots got on the board first, scoring two and a half minutes into the game. Kyle Frerichs (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) then scored for the Lions to tie the game at one just two minutes later.

Both teams traded goals during the remaining time in the first quarter and throughout the second. Troy Valkusky (Drifton, PA/Hazleton), Edwin Doo (Placentia, CA/Valencia) and Grant Garcia (Kingsburg, CA/Kingsburg) all tallied goals for Behrend during the first two quarters to hold the Monmouth lead to one (5-4).

Victor Nguyen (San Jose, CA/Evergreen Valley) scored the first goal of the third quarter to tie the game at five. After Nguyen's tally, the Fighting Scots scored seven unanswered goals in the third to take a 12-5 lead they would not let slip away.

Doo notched his second goal of the game early in the fourth quarter, but Monmouth scored two more to add to their lead before the final whistle.

Garcia and Andrew Lockwood (Orlando, FL/Lake Nona) were both named to the All-Tournament Second Team for their performances over the weekend. Garcia scored seven goals, including a season-high five against Washington & Jefferson. Lockwood made 27 saves in net, including 15 against Washington & Jefferson.

The Lions are back in action at home Saturday to take on Salem for a 12 p.m. start.
