Lions Compete in CWPA Championship Tournament

Erie, PA – The Penn State Behrend men's water polo team hosted the CWPA Championship Tournament on Saturday. The Lions fell to MIT 14-3, Monmouth 25-7, and Washington & Jefferson 19-7.

In game one, Troy Valkusky (Drifton, PA/Hazelton) won every sprint, giving Behrend (0-22) first possession each quarter. MIT (7-9) got on the board first, but were quickly countered by a Ben Katsarsky (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) goal.

The Engineers scored the first four goals of the second half before current MPSF Newcomer of the Week, Isaak Hatopp (Saline, MI/Saline), made the score 6-2.

MIT would go on to score eight more goals in the match to hand the Lions a 14-3 loss. Cameron Makin (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and Kyle Frerichs (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) split time in goal, recording five and eight saves, respectively. Makin also added the third goal for Behrend in the fourth quarter.

In game two against Monmouth (2-8), Hatopp scored four goals on six shots and added two steals to pace the offense. Andre Sardaryzadeh (Murrieta, CA/Elsinore) broke the game open at the 6:27 mark, making it 1-0 Lions.

The fighting Scots then scored four straight before Hatopp made it 4-2. He added another before the half where Monmouth led 7-3. Valkusky and Frerichs each scored goals in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the large Fighting Scots lead.

Frerichs tallied three goals and an assist in game three against W&J (5-12). He also added six saves in net. Hatopp and Valkusky each added two goals to the effort.

The Presidents outscored Behrend in each quarter. They were led by Patrick Fredrick, who scored a game-high seven goals.

The Lions will be back in action next Saturday, October 29, when they take on Gannon. Time of game is TBA.
