Lions Fall to Cal in Final Game of Season

PALO ALTO, Ca. - The Penn State Behrend men's water polo team concluded their season with a 27-3 loss to California Saturday afternoon at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships.

Isaak Hatopp (Saline, MI/Saline) led the Lions (6-15) with a goal and two steals while Grant Garcia (Kingsburg, CA/Kingsburg) and Troy Valkusky (Drifton, PA/Hazleton) each added a goal in the match.

Behrend kept the game close in the opening minutes of the game, scoring a goal 1:51 into the game to make the score 2-1 in favor of Cal. Seven different Bears (19-3) tallied goals in the first quarter to contribute to a nine-goal scoring streak to end the first.

Hatopp ended the Bears' scoring run at 14 by netting his goal of the game, making the score 16-2. Cal netted seven goals in the second quarter to add a 16-goal advantage into the break.

Cal kept the pressure through the second half of action, adding five goals in the third while keeping the Lions' scoreless. Valkusky scored his goal midway through the final quarter of the game.

Greg Kinzler (Plum, PA/Agra Charter Cyber School) tallied a steal and dished out a pair of assists while Kyle Frerichs (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) notched a steal and assist. Matt Olimski (San Diego, CA/Otay Ranch) recorded eight saves in the contest.
