The Penn State Behrend softball team moved to 9-0 in the AMCC after cruising to two wins over Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday, April 11 in Erie, Pa.
In game one, senior pitcher Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour)
held the Bobcats to one run on four hits. She fired six
strikeouts for her eighth win of the season. Katie Whitby
(Tyrone/Tyrone) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Nikki Kaschauer
(South Park/South Park) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs as Behrend
rolled 11-1 in six innings.
In game two the Behrend Lions scored in the top of the first when
Whitby doubled to lead off the game and scored on a double-steal
later in the inning. Pitt-Greensburg earned three straight
walks off freshman pitcher Emma Hahn (Smethport/Smethport) to start
the bottom of the inning, loading the bases. Behrend
then intentionally walked Pitt-Greensburg slugger Kelly
Welsh to bring in a run and tie the game at 1-1. The
bases remained loaded with no outs but Hahn got out of the inning
without further damage and the game remained tied.
In the second Behrend loaded the bases before Allison Babish
(Coraopolis/Montour) stepped to the plate and tripled, clearing the
bases and helping the blue and white grab a 4-1 advantage.
Rachelle Lawrence (Warren Center/North East
Bradford) would also triple, and Behrend added three more runs in
the inning to blow the game open and take a 7-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third Pitt-Greensburg loaded the bases and
threatened to do some major damage but the blue and white escaped
the inning giving up just one run to make it a 7-2 ballgame.
Behrend got that run back in the top of the fourth, getting the
lead back to six runs. The blue and white would go on
to tack on five more runs in the seventh, putting the game out of
reach for a 13-2 win.
Behrend will next play a home non-conference doubleheader on April
14 against Westminster . The doubleheader will begin at 3:00
p.m. and will be broadcast on Image Sports.
