Softball Sweeps Franciscan In AMCC Action

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Julie Heinl pitched five innings and gave up no earned runs, while Amy Greene and Ashley Gruber each hit a two-run homer to lead Penn State Behrend past Franciscan 10-2 in the opener of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) softball doubleheader on Saturday.

The Lions (5-6, 2-0 AMCC) posted an 11-7 victory in game two for the sweep of the Barons (1-9).

In the opener, Behrend scored 10 runs on 13 hits to use the eight-run rule after the fifth inning. Chelsi Riordan went 2-for-2 and Morgan Griffin tallied two hits, including a RBI double in the second inning. Greene smacked her home run in the third inning and Gruber followed with her long ball in the fourth.

Greene completed her day with a 3-for-4 outing with two RBIs in game two. The Lions brought their bats, smacking 16 hits and only committing one error.  Kourtney Walsh started on the hill, pitching 3 2/3 innings and striking out two.

Kelsey Fuller came in for Walsh and recorded the win, pitching 3 1/3 innings and fanning five. Chloe Vernon made two hits in five appearances at the plate and had an RBI double.  Riordan finished the day 4-for-6, getting two more hits in the nightcap.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday at Hilbert. The doubleheader begins 3 p.m.
