Softball Brings Bats in Two Wins Over Hilbert

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball brought out the bats in a 16-10 win over Hilbert in game one of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) doubleheader, before completing the sweep with a 9-0 five-inning game-two victory on Monday afternoon.

There were 32 hits total in the opener with the Lions (8-9, 5-3 AMCC) smacking 17 and four extra-base hits including Amy Greene's fifth home run of the season. Kayla Miller led the way with three hits and Julie Heinl picked up the win on the hill, while Kourtney Walsh earned the save.

It didn't take long for Behrend to take a commanding 11-1 lead after two innings thanks to its first 10 out of 17 hits. The Lions plated four in the first and seven in the second for a 10-run advantage. In the second, Chelsi Riordan doubled and Morgan Griffin singled to put batters on first and third. Next up, Greene hit one straight down the middle and over the fence for a 7-1 lead.

The Hawks (1-12, 0-4 AMCC) chipped away at the lead inning by inning, getting multiple runs in the fourth and the sixth to pull within 11-9. Walsh, who came in as relief, also shined on the opposite side with a triple RBI double in the seventh to help the Lions secure the win.

Kelsey Fuller threw a three-hit shutout in game two, only walking one and striking out another.  Chloe Vernon went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and one run. Fuller tallied two hits and Griffin smacked a double in the win.

The Lions brought out the bats in the third inning add five runs to the two they scored in the second inning. Vernon hit one of two triples in the nightcap in the second, knocking in Marissa Lisanti and Fuller for a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Behrend plated five runs on five hits to make it 7-0. Vernon's second triple was the first hit of the fifth inning to score Lisanti for the first of the final two runs.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday at D'Youville. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
