Lions Sweep Medaille

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team collected two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) wins, defeating Medaille 7-0 and 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

Julie Heinl threw a five-hit shutout in game one combined with the offensive attack from Ashley Gruber and Amy Greene, both going 2-for-3 with two runs each. Kayla Miller hit one over the fence for her first home run of the season.  She also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the nightcap.

It was the seventh win for Kelsey Fuller on the mound in game two, keeping the Lions (13-13, 10-7 AMCC) in the contest and scoring two of the five runs.

The Mavericks (6-16, 4-8 AMCC) were in the lead 1-0 before a small rain delay in the middle of the fourth. The break was just what Behrend needed, plating three runs at the bottom of the frame. Morgan Griffin walked and Greene got on base with a perfectly placed bunt. The two both scored on Miller's single to left field and Fuller made it 3-1 on an error.

Each team exchanged two runs in the sixth and Medaille was able to get one run closer in the top of the seventh, but the Laura Spiridon and Morgan Griffin forced the out at second and Fuller waited until the last batter to get her only strikeout and the win.

In the opener, the Lions scored seven runs on the same amount of hits and Heinl kept the Mavericks off the board. Greene and Gruber each made a double one of their hits, coming in opposite innings. Greene started off the third inning with a two bagger and scored off Gruber's single to right field. Marissa Lisanti's hit scored Gruber and Fuller for a 3-0 lead.

Behrend spread four runs over the last three innings, including Miller's home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-0.

The Lions return to action tomorrow at Grove City. Game one begins at 3:30 p.m.
