Softball Falls to La Roche, 6-5

PITTSBURGH, Pa.  – The Penn State Behrend softball team traveled to La Roche with a 3-0 lead and just three innings of softball to play from where they left off on Tuesday's game two of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) doubleheader. The Redhawks (16-16, 12-6 AMCC) took advantage of the time and battled back for a 6-5 victory to sweep the series.

La Roche had a big fourth inning, getting hits from five out of the eight batters up in the frame and scoring four runs to stay ahead for good.

Sam Grismore had a 2-for-4 performance with three RBIs for the Lions (14-15, 10-8 AMCC). Kelsey Fuller started and pitched five innings and only had two hits on her before the game was called. Kourtney Walsh pitched the final inning and allowed one hit on four batters faced.

Behrend grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to Grismore's single that scored Morgan Griffin and Chelsi Riordan. In the third, Fuller recorded her third double of the season and Amy Greene knocked her in to make it, 3-0.

The Redhawks generated the much needed offense in the fourth to get back in the game. Three straight singles started the bottom of the inning and added two more hits to score four runs.

Kelsey Deem homered in the fifth while Amanda Varhula and Ashley Baron each doubled to get La Roche a 6-3 lead.

The Lions were able to add a run in the sixth and the seventh innings. In the last inning, Behrend had the tying run on third with two outs but were unable to get Grismore off the base.

Deanna Tritinger earned the win and Ashley DeVito picked up the save for the Redhawks.

Behrend secured the sixth seed for the upcoming AMCC playoffs. The Lions face the No. 3 seed on Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m. Site to be determined.
