Softball Ready For AMCC Tournament
The Penn State Behrend softball team will travel to Mount Aloysius on Friday to compete in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships for the 11th time in the last 14 seasons.
ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team will travel to Mount Aloysius on Friday to compete in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships for the 11th time in the last 14 seasons.
The double-elimination tournament begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. when the No. 6 Lions (14-15, 10-8 AMCC) battle third-seed Pitt-Bradford (15-17, 13-5 AMCC) in the opening seven-inning game. Behrend is looking for its fifth conference championship this weekend. The Lions won back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009.
The tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, with regional play beginning May 12.
Behrend is led by juniors Amy Greene and Ashley Gruber. Greene leads the team with a .419 batting average, 36 hits and 21 runs scored. She has smacked seven doubles and four home runs this season. Gruber leads the team in RBIs (27), doubles (9) and home runs (5), while ranking second in hits (28) and runs (20).
