Behrend Falls Twice in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After starting the year with two straight wins, the Penn State Behrend softball team suffered two losses on day two of their spring break trip in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Lions (2-2) fell to RIT (2-2) in the opener 5-2 and then dropped a 12-4 decision to undefeated Bridgewater State (6-0).

Behrend grabbed the early lead with scoring two runs in the first inning. Ashley Gruber (Burton, OH/Berkshire) had an RBI double followed by an RBI single by Callie Markovich (Edinboro, PA/Northwestern) to make it 2-0.

The Tigers scored one run in the first and four unearned runs in the fourth frame, while holding Behrend scoreless across six innings.

The Bears put up five runs scattered among the first two innings, but the Lions scored four runs in the third to get within one. Gruber and Markovich kept their bats hot from game one and each tallied two-run singles with two outs to get Behrend on the board.

Bridgewater State finished with 12 runs on nine hits, adding seven more in the fourth. Jen Shaw smacked two three-run homers for the Bears.

The Lions return to action against WPI and Clark. Game one begins at 9 a.m.
