Softball Splits on Final Day in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Kelsey Fuller (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge Springs) hit a sacrifice fly to knock in the game-winning run in a 1-0 victory over Eastern Nazarene on the final day of the Penn State Behrend softball spring break trip on Friday.

Fuller also recorded the win on the mound, pitching seven innings and striking out four for the Lions (3-7). In the opener, Behrend fell to Finlandia 11-3 in six innings. The Finlandia Lions (9-4) had a five-run sixth inning to end the game on the eight-run rule.

In game two, the Lions tallied six hits and got the one run they needed in the fifth frame. Sydney Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) was a perfect 2-for-2 and Shana Merkle (Corry, PA/Corry) had two hits in three appearances.

Sherrieb started out the fifth inning with a single before reaching second on a sacrifice bunt. She reached third on a throwing error and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Fuller.

The Lions tallied three runs on five hits in game one, while Finlandia put up four runs in the first and two more in the second before the big sixth inning.

Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) picked up the loss in the opener, pitching 5 2/3 innings.

Behrend is back in action on Saturday, March 24 at Franciscan. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
