Lions Shut Out Pitt-Bradford Twice

OLEAN, NY – Amy Greene (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent) went a combined 6-for-8 with two doubles and a two-run homer to help the Penn State Behrend softball team shut out Pitt-Bradford twice in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Lions (13-9, 7-1 AMCC) not only dominated offensively, but defensively with a 10-0 game-one victory and 8-0 win in the nightcap.  Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) earned the wins in the circle, only allowing six total hits on the day.

Three was the magic number in game one for Behrend. The Lions scored three runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, while sneaking a run in the fifth for the 10 runs. With two outs in the top of the fourth, Behrend scored all three runs on three Panther errors to take the early lead.

Greene started off the sixth with a double to right center and scored on an RBI single by Samantha Grismore (Westfield, NY/Westfield Academy). Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) knocked in Callie Markovich (Edinboro, PA/Northwestern) with a single to right field, before Grismore scored on the second out of the inning, crediting Sydney Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) with the RBI.

The Lions finished with 15 hits, getting four more in the seventh to tack on the final runs of the game. One of those hits was a double by Ashley Gruber (Burton, OH/Berkshire) and another was Greene's third home run of the season.

After scoring two runs in the first, Behrend scattered six more over the fifth in sixth innings to end game two early. Gruber hit her second double of the day to start the fifth followed by a single from Greene. Markovich, who finished 3-for-4, sent home Gruber with a single to center field before scoring on a double by Griffin for a 4-0 lead.

Griffin got another double in the sixth to score two out of the four runs, leading the Lions to their second shut-out win over Pitt-Bradford.

Greene was a perfect 4-for-4 in game two, and Fuller gave up two hits and struck out three for her seventh win.

The Lions return to action on Saturday at Penn State Altoona. The AMCC doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
