Softball Splits With Buffalo State

BUFFALO, NY – The Penn State Behrend softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Buffalo State on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions won the opener 3-2 and the Bengals used the same score to take game two.

In game one, Behrend (19-11) used three consecutive hits in the fourth inning to load the bases and Sydney Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) walked to send Samantha Grismore (Westfield, NY/Westfield Academy) in for the game winner.

The Lions only allowed the Bengals (16-12) to score two runs in the second inning, before answering back with two runs in the third to even the game at 2-all. After Sherrieb ripped a single up the middle to start the third, Fuller reached on a fielder's choice. Two wild pitches got Sherrieb home and Fuller scored on the second out of the inning.

In the fourth, Behrend got in scoring position with three singles. Grismore got to third on a fielder's choice by Kayla Miller (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) and scored on Sherrieb's at bat for the eventual game-winning run.

Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) went 3-for-3 and Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) went the distance for her 10th win of the season.

The Lions started the scoring in game two, plating lead-off hitter Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) on Amy Greene's (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent) sacrifice fly to right field for a 1-0 lead. Buffalo State responded right back with a run in the bottom of the frame.

The same happened in the third with each team exchanging runs. The Bengals got revenge from game one in the fourth inning, scoring on an RBI double to left center with one out for the final run.

Fuller and Callie Markovich (Edinboro, PA/Northwestern) had two runs in the nightcap for Behrend. Fuller also pitched and suffered the loss, giving up six runs and three earned runs.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Hiram. The non-conference doubleheader begins at 3:30 and will be televised on the Image Sports Network.
