Softball Splits at Brenau To Open Season

DECATUR, Ga. – The Penn State Behrend softball team split a pair of games to open up the 2013 season on Saturday at Brenau in Decatur, Georgia on Saturday.

The Lions (1-1) fell to Brenau in the first game 7-0 while scoring 22 runs on 15 hits in the second game to defeat Wesleyan (Ga.). Behrend scored 10 runs in the third inning added another six in the fourth to win against Wesleyan in five innings.

Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) was a perfect 3-for-3 in game two, driving in two runs while Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern ) allowed one hit in four innings of work to earn the shut out.

Five different players scored three runs apiece in game two. Fuller not only pitched but she recorded two hits, two RBIs and three runs.

After scoring three runs in the first two innings, the Lions brought out the bats in the third with a 10-run inning to take a commanding 16-0 lead.

Mirrissa Parker (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) had two hits on three at bats and driving in two runners.

In game one, Syndey Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) was the only Behrend player with multiple hits. She went 3-for-4 in the second spot for the Lions.

Brenau took a one-run lead to end the first inning and came right back in the second to score four more to take a 6-0 advantage. Two more runs were scored in the sixth to complete the 7-0 game.

Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) got the loss in the circle. She pitched six innings and gave up six earned runs. Heinl tallied one of the five hits for Behrend, smacking a double in the seventh.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Agnes Scott at Brenau, beginning at 10 a.m.
