Softball Falls in Championship Game; Three Named All-Tournament Team

DECATUR, Ga. – The Penn State Behrend softball team defeated Agnes Scott 7-2 to advance to the championship game, but fell to Brenau 11-2 in the title match to go 1-1 on the final day of the Lauren Giddings Tournament in Decatur, Georgia.

Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst Prep), Kayla Frawley (Cranberry, PA/Cranberry), and Syndey Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) were named to the All-Tournament Team for helping the Lions finish runners up and going 2-2 on the weekend.

In the opening game vs. Agnes Scott, Sherrieb and Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) each went 2-for-4. Hedderick went the distance for the win, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.

Sherrieb smacked a double on one of the seven hits by the Lions and the first hit of the first inning to get on base. Hedderick walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Griffin drove in Sherrieb and Callie Markovich (Edinboro, PA/Northwestern) sent Hedderick home with a ground out for a 2-0 lead.

Another run was added in the third and three more in the fourth. Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/ Northwestern) made her way around the bases in the third inning after an error, stolen base and double by Hedderick.

In the nightcap, Brenau picked up its second win over Behrend in two days to win the tournament with a seven-run second inning.

Chelsi Riordan (Conneaut, PA/Linesville) had one of the four hits, making it a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning.

Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), who faced Brenau yesterday, could not get redemption in the circle. Hedderick came in relief and fanned three batters in 2 2/3 innings.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Hiram and Clark (Mass.) at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
