Softball Drops Two Games in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fl. – The Penn State Behrend softball team dropped an 8-0 decision to Hiram and then fell to Clark (Mass.) 14-0 in the opening games of the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida on Monday.

The Lions (2-4) were unable to get on the board after scoring 31 runs in their first four games.

In the first game against Hiram, the Terriers (2-1) plated three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to make the difference. Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) suffered her first loss on the mound, giving up 10 hits and eight runs in six innings.

Syndey Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) went 2-for-3 to lead Behrend, while Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) had a hit on three at bats.

In the nightcap, Clark took a 2-0 lead after two innings and then exploded for seven runs in third and five more in the fourth. Clark scored 14 runs on 12 hits with no errors for the game.

Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) went 2-for-2 with a walk and also pitched for the Lions, letting only four earned runs.

Behrend is off tomorrow but returns to action on Wednesday against Kenyon and Wilmington.
