Softball Topped by Dominican, Wittenberg

FORT MYERS, Fl. – The Penn State Behrend softball team was held scoreless on their final day at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida, falling to Dominican 9-0 and Wittenberg 11-0 both in five innings.

Dominican and Wittenberg scored their runs in the first few innings to get ahead and stay ahead. Dominican plated six runs in the first and three in the second, while holding the Lions (4-8) to just two hits on the day.

Sydney Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) and Stacey Herzog (Smethport, PA/Smethport) each went 1-for-2.  Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/ Northwestern) took the loss in two thirds innings pitched. Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) came in for relief to finish the opener.

Against Wittenberg, the Tigers (7-1) tallied 12 hits and scored 11 runs for the win. Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) posted the only hit for Behrend, making it a two-run double.

 Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) was the losing pitcher for the Lions, striking out five.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday, March 27 against Pitt-Bradford. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
