Softball Brings Out Bats Against Franciscan

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team brought out the bats on a cold yet sunny day, smacking 21 hits for 25 runs to earn 20 RBIs and defeat Franciscan 12-1 and 13-0 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) softball action on Sunday.

The pitching staff of Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) and Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst) combined to allow just six hits all day.

Heinl got the win in game one, giving up four hits and striking out four. Fuller started in the circle in the nightcap and allowed one hit for the victory. Hedderick came in to pitch two innings and struck out a pair of batters.

The Lions (11-17, 7-7 AMCC) wasted no time getting ahead in game one, scoring four runs on three hits in the first inning. Chelsi Riordan (Conneaut Lake, PA/Linesville) highlighted the inning with a three RBI double.

Behrend tallied three runs in the next inning, two in the third and three more in the fourth. Hedderick led with two hits and three RBIs, while Fuller scored four runs in the opener.

Nicole King (Grove City, PA/Grove City) had her best outing in a Lions uniform, going 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBIs. Stacey Herzog (Smethport, PA/Smethport) had four of the team's 12 RBIs in the win.

In the second game, Behrend waited to get on the scoreboard until the second inning. The Lions went through the entire batting order to get four hits and five runs. King had a two RBI single up the middle and then came back in the third to hit a two RBI double.

Behrend added four runs in the third and the same amount in the fourth.

As a team, the Lions hit .404 and stole seven bases on the afternoon.

Behrend returns to action on Tuesday against Houghton. The non-conference doubleheader begins at 3:30 p.m.
