Pitt-Bradford Defeats Softball in First Round of AMCC Tournament

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford softball team defeated Penn State Behrend 7-1 in the opening round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships on Friday afternoon at Penn State Altoona.

The third-seeded Panthers (19-14) scored seven runs on 13 hits and held the sixth-seeded Lions (15-20) to just one run for the win. Behrend will face elimination tomorrow morning against the loser of No. 1 Penn State Altoona or No. 5 Mt. Aloysius at 9 a.m.

Syndey Mosby pitched Pitt-Bradford to victory with seven strikeouts and allowing seven hits in seven innings. The Panthers had five players with multiple hits, including Alyssa Cunningham with a 2-for-3 showing and three RBIs.

Pitt-Bradford put up a run in the first inning and added two more in the second for a 3-0 lead. The Panthers waited for the sixth frame to have their big inning, smacking five hits to score four runs.

Behrend avoided the shut out in the top of the seventh. Callie Markovich (Edinboro, PA/Northwestern) started with a single through the left side and advanced to second on the second out of the inning. Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) sent Markovich off second and into home with a single up the middle for the Lions only offense.

Griffin and Markovich finished with a pair of hits each. Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) suffered the loss in the circle for Behrend, pitching six innings and striking out one.
