Softball Falls in Season Opener Games

CLERMONT, Fl. – The Penn State Behrend softball team dropped a pair of games on their first day of spring break at the N.T.S. games, falling 10-8 in the opener to Brandeis and then 15-7 to Coast Guard in the nightcap on Sunday afternoon.

In the close season opener for the Lions (0-2), Brandeis grabbed a 7-3 lead after three innings. Behrend cut the lead to two after five, but Brandeis scored three in the six and the Lions  matched that in the seventh however it was not enough to start the year with a win.

Amanda Krolczyk (Union City, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) and Maddie Mulig (Shaler, PA/Shaler) each smacked three hits in the first game. Mulig also knocked in three runs an and scored one run.

Against the Coast Guard, Behrend jumped out to a 6-4 lead after three innings. The Coast Guard responded with 11 runs spanned over the next three innings to win, 15-7.

Mulig completed her day with a 2-for-3 showing in game two with another RBI. Krolzcyk was the starting pitcher and went 4 and 1/3 innings. Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) matched Mulig with a pair of hits and an RBI in the loss.

The Lions return to action tomorrow Monmouth at 9 a.m. and Heidelberg at 11 a.m.
