Lions Defeat Sage in 10; Fall to Ithaca

CLERMONT, Fl. – Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) went 5-for-8 with five runs scored, two doubles and two RBIs in a pair of games to help the Penn State Behrend softball team pick up with first win of the season on the third day of their spring break trip in Florida.

The Lions (1-5) defeated Sage 10-7 in 10 innings, thanks to three runs in the top of the final frame for the first victory. Behrend then fell to Ithaca 9-2 in the second game of the day.

Fuller went 4-for-6 in game one, scoring four runs and driving in another. In the 10th inning, she had a hit, an RBI, a stolen base and a run for the Lions.

Both teams were tied heading into the seventh inning. Each plated one run to keep it tied and send it into extra innings. Once again, both squads scored two runs in the ninth, but Behrend got the final say in the 10th for the win.

Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) scored the game-winning run after being placed on second to start the inning for the tiebreaker rule. Shannon McDonnell (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) and Fuller also scored for the three runs that sealed the deal.

Freshman Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) earned her first win on the hill, pitching 8 2/3 innings and striking out nine while only giving up two earned runs.

In game two, Ithaca game with hot bats. The Bombers tallied nine runs on 13 hits, while the Lions mustered two runs on four hits. Both runs came in the third inning.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Mt. Ida and Lesley.
