Softball Wins Two; Defeats Mt. Ida and Lesley

CLERMONT, Fl. – The Penn State Behrend softball team defeated Mount Ida 5-1 and then Lesley 5-3 on Thursday in Clermont, Florida.

In game one, the Lions smacked 14 hits for five runs to get their second win of the season.

Mount Ida scored a quick run in the first and then the rest belonged to Behrend.

Fuller tripled to start the third and scored on Amanda Krolczyk's (Union City, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) sacrifice fly. The next inning, the Lions added three more runs. Julia Luke (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) and Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst) singled, before scoring on Kelsey Fuller's (Albion, PA/Northwestern) hit to make it 3-1. Krolczyk got her second RBI to knock in Fuller for the final run of the frame.

Shannon McDonnell (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) led off the fifth inning with a hit, stolen base and then advanced to third on an error. She reached home on Hedderick's single with two outs showing. Fuller hit well and pitched well. She got her first win in the circle, allowing just one run and striking out three.

The Lions started the scoring early on with three runs in the first to take the lead and hold on for their second straight victory. Krolczyk and Maddie Mulig (Shaler, PA/Shaler) both hit back-to-back doubles to centerfield to each knock in a run. Centerfield seemed to be the spot with McDonnell sending her hit there to score Hedderick for a 3-1 lead.

Behrend recorded two more runs in the fourth for a 5-3 victory.

Krolczyk finished the day 5-for-6 for the Lions. Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) went the distance for the win, pitching seven innings and giving up two earned runs. She also struck out five batters.

The Lions return to action today against Babson and Simmons, beginning at 3 p.m.
