Lions Win Home and Conference Opener
ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team started their home and conference opener with a pair of wins over Hilbert, defeating the Hawks 5-1 in game one and 9-4 in the nightcap on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lions (5-9, 2-0 AMCC) scored five runs in the second inning off four hits in game two to take lead for good and complete the sweep. Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) had two of the extra-base hits, including a triple and two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.

Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) got her team-leading third win on the hill. She went three innings without surrendering a hit and tied a season best with fanning nine batters.

With one out in the bottom of the second frame, Behrend got four straight hits with three being triples. Hedderick led with a three bagger to right center and Miller followed with a single to right field to get the first run. Miller stole second and Kelsey Heinrich (Brookville, PA/Brookville) smacked the next triple through the right side, almost in the same spot as Hedderick.

Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) walked and Sydney Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) recorded the two RBI triple, before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern).

Hilbert got its first two runs in the top of the fourth, but Hedderick's bat was still hot from the triple and hit her first home run of the season to make it 7-2 by scoring Maddie Mulig (Shaler, PA/Shaler) off second.

Allania Banta (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) had a two RBI single in the sixth to put Behrend two-runs away from the eight-run rule with a 9-3 lead. Hilbert turned a double play to halt the Lions and then tallied two straight hits to start the final frame, but Miller struck out her final batter and Behrend managed to get two straight outs for the win.

In game one, Amanda Krolczyk (Union City, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) had two hits for the Lions with an RBI and a sacrifice bunt. Fuller was the winning pitcher, giving up one run on seven hits and striking out six.

The Hawks got on the board first in the opener thanks to Rachel Collier's double to right field to know in Amanda Binder for a 1-0 lead. Behrend responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  The Lions added three more runs in the third and did not allow Hilbert to round the bases in the final six innings.

Banta started the third inning by reaching on an error that got her to third base. Krolczyk singled up the middle to score Banta, before Hedderick registered a double to almost complete the cycle on the day. That double sent Mulig home and then she scored on a single by Julia Luke (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) to make it 5-1.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow at Pitt-Bradford for a conference doubleheader, beginning at 3 p.m.
