Washington & Jefferson Take Two From Softball

ERIE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson softball team posted two come-from-behind victories over Penn State Behrend, winning 6-2 and 13-10 in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions (11-13) went from recording two hits in the first game to 12 in the second, but the Presidents (16-6) rallied back to earn the sweep.

In game one, Behrend got both hits and two runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Kayla Frawley (Cranberry, PA/Cranberry) and Sydney Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity), both celebrating senior day, each got a hit to start the frame. Fuller knocked in Frawley on her ground out to third base and Allaina Banta (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) hit a sacrifice fly into right field to send home Sherrieb for a one-run edge.

Washington & Jefferson tied it up in the sixth with back-to-back doubles with two outs showing to score one run and make it 2-all. The Presidents kept their bats out and added four more in the top of the seventh to for the win.

In game two, Behrend grabbed a 6-1 lead after the first two innings. W&J got within one by scoring four runs in the third. The Presidents made it 11-6 with six runs on six hits in the fourth inning, while adding two insurance runs in the seventh.

Maddie Mulig (Shaler, PA/Shaler) and Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) had three hits apiece. Fuller scored three runs and Mulig knocked in five runs.

With the first inning with bases loaded, Mulig sent a three-run double to center field to start the scoring. Mulig then touched home on a single by Julie Luke (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) for a quick 4-0 advantage.

Behrend plated two more runs in the following frame thanks to a double by Fuller and a single from Mulig.

Washington & Jefferson responded with 10 runs over the next two innings to take the lead and stay there. The Lions made it 11-10 with four runs in the sixth, knocking in one run at a time after loading the bases.

Amanda Krolczyk (Union City, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) started in the circle for Behrend, pitching three innings before Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) took over and eventually got her second straight loss.

Krolczyk finished with a pair of hits and three runs with one RBI.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday against D'Youville. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
