Softball Sweeps Medaille in AMCC Action

BUFFALO, NY - The Penn State Behrend softball team swept Medaille 8-0 and 13-1 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Thursday afternoon.

The Lions (16-14, 13-3 AMCC) scattered all eight runs in game one across six innings of play and Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) earned the shut-out victory with six strikeouts and allowing seven hits.

In game two, Behrend packed its runs in the first three of five innings, scoring four in the first and seven in the second for a comfortable lead. In total, the Lions scored 13 runs on 18 hits. Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) only gave up two hits and struck out three in five innings of work. She also was one of three players to hit a double and a triple in the nightcap.

Maddie Mulig (Shaler, PA/Shaler) and Allania Banta (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) were the other two with a double and triple. Amanda Krolczyk (Union City, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) and Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) tallied doubles, while Shannon McDonnell (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) smacked a triple for the ninth extra-base hit in game two.

In the game one shutout, Hedderick hit her team-leading ninth home run with a solo shot in the third inning. Banta started her hot hitting in the opener with two triples, while Sydney Sherrieb (Washington, PA/Trinity) and Kayla Frawley (Cranberry, PA/Cranberry) each had a double in the win.

The Lions return to action on Saturday at Pitt-Greensburg. Game times are 2 and 4 p.m.
