La Roche Elminates Softball From AMCC Tournament
The La Roche softball team eliminated Penn State Behrend from the 2014 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament with a 6-4 decision on Saturday afternoon.
Deanna Tritinger hit one of three home runs in the seven-inning game in the third inning that saw four runs by the Redhawks (14-16) to make the difference and help them stay alive in the tournament.
Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) went 3-for-4 with two runs for the Lions (20-16), while Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) and Allaina Banta (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) each smacked a long ball.
Banta struck first with a ball over the fence to give Behrend a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the opening frame. A scoreless inning went by before La Roche added four runs in the in the top of the third. Elizabeth Palumbo, the lead-off batter, reached on a strikeout and wild pitch and then scored on a triple by Kim McLay.
Kara Sainato knocked in McLay with a double to center field for a 2-1 lead. The next hit came from Tritinger straight down the middle and over the fence for a two-run homer to make it 4-1.
Behrend cut the lead to one run by the top of the fifth inning. Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) had an RBI single in the third and Fuller hit a home run on the first at-bat in the fourth.
La Roche added two insurance runs in the fifth to go ahead, 6-3.
The Lions were able to record one run on two hits in the fifth, but the Redhawks and pitcher Kaylee Girdwood halted the come back to see at least one more game in the tournament.
Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) pitched three innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs in the loss.
