Lions Fall to Lake Forest, Manhattanville in Florida

CLERMONT, Fl. - The Penn State Behrend softball team suffered a 9-3 loss to Lake Forest and then brought the bats out in game two but fell 14-11 to Manhattanville on the second day of spring break in Florida.
Lake Forest scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead and hold on for the win. Lake Forest scored nine runs on nine hits, while the Lions
Shannon McDonnell (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. One of McDonnell's hits was a homerun and Allania Banta (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) smacked one over the fence for a two-run homer for Behrend.
Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst) pitched the first three innings and gave up five hits and four earned runs.
Jessi Werner was in the circle for Lake Forest, throwing a complete game and striking out nine.
In game two, the Lions had five extra-base hits including two homeruns, one by Alexa Bupp (Warren, PA/Warren) and the other by Sarah Blagg (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley).
Hedderick finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the nightcap.
With the score tied 8-all after four innings, Manhattanville erupted for four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning. Banta and and McDonnell each scored a run in the seventh for the comeback attempt thanks to a single by Hedderick, but Behrend came up three runs short.
The Lions return to action tomorrow against Rhode Island and Roger Williams.
