Softball Shuts Out North Park; Edged By Bethany

CLERMONT, Fla. - Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) pitched a five-hit shutout to help the Penn State Behrend softball team collect a 5-0 win over North Park on Thursday during spring training in Florida.

The Lions (2-6) dropped the opener by one run to Bethany, 1-0.

Miller fanned seven batters, while Kelsey Heinrich (Brookville, PA/Brookville) and Sydney Linkerhof (Corry, PA/Corry) each went 2-for-3 to help Behrend get its second win. Heinrich had a double and Linkerhof knocked in a run.

The Lions scored three runs in the second inning and two more the following frame, and the defense kept North Park off the scoreboard.

In game one, Bethany tallied its lone run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to knock in Marissa Bosley for the game winner. Kelsey Bish pitched the complete game for Bethany, while Alexa Bupp (Warren, PA/Warren) was in the circle for Behrend and striking out four.

Sarah Blagg (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) recorded two of the five hits for the Lions.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Stockton and Hood. Games are at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
