Softball Sweeps Medaille in AMCC Action
ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team swept Medaille for the second season in a row in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on a snowy Wednesday afternoon.

The Lions (15-13, 11-3 AMCC) defeated the Mavericks (13-20, 7-9 AMCC) 12-4 in six innings for the opener and then posted a 10-7 game-two victory. Amanda Krolczyk (Union City, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) and Sarah Blagg (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) each went 4-for-7 with a double on the day.

In game one, Behrend took a 9-3 lead after four innings and added three more in the bottom of the sixth for the eight-run rule. Blagg was a perfect 3-for-3, while Shannon McDonnell (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) had one hit and four RBIs thanks to a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.

After Medaille scored three runs in the third, Behrend came back with four in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Blagg singled to center field and scored on an error along with Allania Banta (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf). Alexa Bupp (Warren, PA/Warren) hit the first home run of the game to score McDonnell to make it 4-3.

The next inning, McDonnell's homer scored three out of the five runs recorded for a commanding six-run lead.  The Lions added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Blagg doubled to left field and reached home on an error. Krolczyk tripled down right field line to score Banta and McDonnell's ground out pushed Krolczyk across the plate for the final margin.

Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) threw all six innings and allowed six hits, while striking out four for her ninth win of the season.

The combined pitching of Bupp and Natalie Brock (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) helped the Lions complete the sweep in game two. Bupp collected the win in the first three innings and Brock earned the save and struck out three batters.

Behrend posted five runs in the third inning to take an 8-4 lead and hold on for the victory. The Mavericks scored two runs in the seventh but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.

In the big third inning, Banta led off with a walk and Krolczyk singled to left center. With runners on second and third, McDonnell hit a two RBI double through the left side and advanced to third on the throw. Bupp also walked and Julia Luke (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) doubled to send Bupp and McDonnell home.

With no outs, Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) singled and stole second. A Kelsey Heinrich (Brookville, PA/Brookville) sacrifice fly scored Luke for the fifth run of the frame.

The Lions return to action on Friday against Hilbert. The AMCC doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
