CLERMONT, Fl. – Sarah Blagg (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) went 2-for-4 with RBIs and one run scored to lead the Penn State Behrend softball team past Waynesburg 11-2 in the season opener on Sunday in Clermont, Florida.

The Lions picked up their first victory of 2016 with six runs in the third inning to defeat the Yellow Jackets in six innings. Behrend dropped the nightcap in six innings 10-2 to Moravian to finish day one of spring break with 1-1 record.

Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) was the winning hurler in game one, pitching all six innings and striking out six. Offensively, she tallied two hits and drove in a run.

Julia Luke (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) had a pair of hits, while Alexa Bupp (Warren, PA/Warren) smacked a double in the third inning.

The Lions did all the damage against Waynesburg in the third inning. After getting on the board with two runs in the first, Behrend took an 8-0 lead with six hits in the third.

Kelsey Heinrich (Brookville, PA/Brookville) started the frame with a double and then scored on Bupp's double with two outs showing. Luke drove in Bupp with a single and then scored on Madison Zimmer's (Carnegie, PA/Chartiers Valley) hit. Blagg tripled for the final hit of the inning to add two more runs.

The Yellow Jackets added a run in the third off a single and then again in the fourth off a sacrifice fly for the final 9-2 margin.

Against the Greyhounds, Behrend only tallied three hits and scored both runs in the third inning. Moravian tallied three runs in the second and then took a small 5-3 lead after the fifth, but used five runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Lions.

In the third, AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) doubled to lead off and then scored on the second out, before Shannon McDonnell (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) hit her first long ball to make it 3-2.

Bupp started in the circle and pitched until Zimmer came in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Lebanon Valley at 9 a.m. and Alvernia at 11 a.m.
