Bupp Throws Perfect Game; Lions Take Two From Franciscan

ERIE, Pa. – Alexa Bupp (Warren, PA/Warren) threw a perfect game in five innings of work, while striking out a career-high 11 batters to lead Penn State Behrend past Franciscan 19-0 in game two of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) softball doubleheader on Saturday.

Bupp made her first win of the season memorable, fanning 11 of the 15 batters she faced in a shortened game. In the four remaining batters could not get a hit or walk off Bupp. The Lions (11-9, 4-2 AMCC) posted an 8-0 five-inning game-one victory for their sixth straight win this week.

In the nightcap, Behrend smacked 20 hits including 11 in the fourth inning that produced 11 runs and 16 RBIs. AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) led with a 3-for-4 performance with three runs and four RBIs.

The Lions started game two with four runs in the first inning and then added three more in the third and another in the fourth to get one away from the eight-run rule. Behrend then exploded for 11 runs in the fourth to take a commanding lead.

The great pitching started with Nichols in game one. The freshman did not allow a base runner through three innings. The only hit came in the fourth and she walked another, while striking out seven for her third win in the circle.

Becca Svoboda (Sagamore, OH/Nordonia) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Kellie Brown (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) tallied her first collegiate double in the win.

The Lions put up their first two runs in the second frame. Bupp tripled and then scored on a ground out by Svoboda, before Shannon McDonnell (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) scored on another ground out for a 2-0 lead after two.

Behrend took advantage of five hits and scored five runs in the bottom of the third for a 7-0 lead. McDonnell scored the run in the fifth that halted the game in five innings due to the eight-run rule. Svoboda knocked her in with an RBI single that popped up and fell behind first base to send home McDonnell, who got on with a single to right field.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Washington & Jefferson. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
