Softball Sweeps Pitt-Greensburg in AMCC Action

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team swept Pitt-Greensburg in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) doubleheader 8-0 in six innings and 11-1 in five innings on Saturday afternoon.

Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) threw a five-hit shutout in game one, while Alexa Bupp smacked two doubles and picked up the win in the circle in the nightcap for the Lions (18-10, 8-2 AMCC).

Behrend scored five runs in the first two innings and then added three more in the sixth to post their eighth conference shut-out victory of the season.

Back-to-back doubles by Sarah Blagg (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) and then AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) produced one run and a single by Bupp gave the Lions a 2-0 lead after the first.

Four singles in the second resulted in three runs. Katie Gozzard (Pittsburgh, PA/Deer Lakes) singled and Miller also tallied a hit to follow. Blagg knocked in Gozzard with a single to center field. Blagg got in scoring position with a steal. Shannon McDonnell (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) got them both one with a single through the left side for a 5-0 lead.

Behrend completed the eight-run rule in the top of the sixth with three runs on two hits.

Miller now improves to 8-3 on the year, fanning five batters and walking two in five and one third innings.

In game two, the Lions scored all 11 runs in the first inning to stay ahead for good. Behrend tallied seven hits and three errors for the early lead. The Bobcats (10-24, 8-8 AMCC) recorded two of their four hits in the bottom of the fifth to score one run for the final margin.

McDonnell and Bupp each posted two hits and two RBIs in the nightcap. Bupp pitched all five innings for the win, fanning six.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Mt. Aloysius. Game times are 1 and 3 p.m.
