Heinrich Leads Softball to Split on Day Two in Florida

CLERMONT, FL – Kelsey Heinrich (Brookville, PA/Brookville) went 6-for-8 with a pair of doubles and a run to help the Penn State Behrend softball team split a doubleheader on day two of spring break in Clermont, Florida.

The Lions (1-3) fell to Concordia 2-1 in the opener and then defeated Wheaton 5-2 in game two. Heinrich was 3-for-4 in each game, while Carson Hauser (Westfield, NY/Westfield Academy) also went 3-for-4 in the nightcap along with two runs and a double.

Against Wheaton, Behrend scored three runs in the third and two more in the fifth to earn its first win of the season. In the bottom of the third, Lacey Hilderbrand (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) hit a sacrifice fly to score Heinrich to cut the lead to 2-1 before AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) smacked a two-run double to score Hauser and Shannon McDonnell (Fayston, VT/Harwood Union) for a 3-2 lead.

Hauser and McDonnell scored the two runs in the fifth to give the Lions a cushion heading into the final innings. Hauser singles and then came home on McDonnell's RBI double. Nichols got her third RBI with a single to bring in McDonnell a 5-2 advantage.

Nichols finished 3-for-3 in game two and Rachel Miller (North East, PA/North East) got her first win in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out three.

In game one, Behrend tallied seven hits including four extra-base hits but could not get past Concordia. Alexa Bupp (Warren, PA/Warren) tallied two hits with a double and Heinrich added two doubles on three hits.

Nichols pitched 2.2 innings, gave up two earned runs and struck out three in the loss. Bupp came in for the final 3.1 innings and struck out six.

With two outs and bases loaded, Concordia were walked two times in a row to get on the board twice. The Lions rallied in the seventh with a pair of doubles with one out showing. Hilderbrand doubled down right-field line and Heinrich followed to score Hilderbrand. Two ground outs secured the win for Concordia, 2-1.
