Softball Defeats John Carroll; Falls to Wittenberg

CLERMONT, FL – The Penn State Behrend softball team split on their final day of spring break, defeating John Carroll 9-6 and then falling to Wittenberg 4-0 in non-conference action on Friday afternoon in Clermont, Florida.

The Lions (3-7) had a seven-run third inning against the Blue Streaks to erase a five-run deficit and collect their third win of the season. AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while recording the win in the circle.

Allania Banta (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBeouf) went 2-for-4 and Katie Gozzard (Pittsburgh, PA/Deer Lakes) tallied two hits, including a solo home run in the sixth inning.

John Carroll got on the board first with five runs in the first, getting a two-run homerun from Angie Zappitelli. Behrend tallied one run in the second, before exploding for five runs in the third. The Lions tallied five straight hits, then back-to-back walks to take an 8-6 lead.

Gozzard added the insurance run in the sixth for the final 9-6 margin.

In the nightcap, the Tigers recorded three runs in the second and one in the fifth for a 4-0 victory.

Nichols and Banta each recorded a hit in the loss.

Behrend returns to action on Monday, March 27 at Thiel. Game times are 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.
