CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team swept Mt. Aloysius 6-1 and 6-1 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, the Lions (24-8, 11-3 AMCC) scored all six runs on extra-base hits. Behrend had two doubles, a triple and a home run to take a 6-0 lead after the sixth inning. Mackenzie McIntire (Stoneboro, PA/Lakeiew) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while AJ Nichols (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) pitched 5.1 innings, struck out five and gave up one earned run for her 13th win. Carson Hauser (Westfield, NY/Westfield Academy) got a triple in the opener to collect her 100th career hit.
The Lions got on the board in the third inning with a run thanks to a McIntire double to left center to score Hauser. McIntire did it again in the fifth inning, doubling to left center but to score Katie Gozzard (Pittsburgh, PA/Deer Lakes) for a 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the sixth, Behrend scored four more runs to take a 6-0 lead. Hauser tripled to left field to score Angela Sullivan (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) and Angela Dale (Clinton, PA/West Allegheny). Gozzard followed with a home run to knock in Hauser for the six-run advantage.
The Mounties (10-10, 3-5 AMCC) tacked on a run in the sixth.
In game two, Behrend scattered six runs over four innings to post an identical 6-1 score.
With a narrow 2-1 lead after the fourth, Nichols and Kargol each hit a solo homeruns in the fifth to extend the lead to 4-1.
With bases loaded in the fifth, McIntire picked up her third RBI of the day with a single to knock Marissa Torretti (DuBois, PA/DuBois) to make it 5-1.
The Lions added another run in the seventh to earn their sixth straight win.
Behrend returns to action on Tuesday at Fredonia. The doubleheader begins at 3:30 p.m.
