Softball Sweeps Allegheny in Season Opener

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend softball team swept the Allegheny Gators on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader.

Game 1
* The Lions took on the Gators in game one, winning 10-5
* Behrend came out strong with Kylee Bundy (DuBois, PA/DuBois) hitting a two-run homer in the first inning, sending herself and Marissa Torretti (DuBois, PA/DuBois) home
* Maria Jones (Wilcox, PA/Johnsonburg) scored in the first, sent home with a Nichole DeRose (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) walk while the bases were loaded
* The Lions scored two more runs in the second and three more in the third to make it an 8-1 game
* Bundy repeated in the third, hitting her second two-run homer on the night
* In the bottom of the third, the Gators scored three runs but were unable to overcome the deficit
* Bundy led Behrend with three hits and four RBIs
* Mackenzie McIntire (Stoneboro, PA/Lakeview) tallied three hits with one homerun
* Kayla Lindberg (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) recorded her first collegiate start and win, pitching a complete game and striking out nine batters

Game 2
* Behrend won the second game of the series against the Gators, 11-3 in six innings
* The Lions had a big second inning, scoring six runs
* Lauren Olevnik (Waverly Township, PA/Abington Heights) started the scoring spree with a double to left center, sending McIntire home
* Bundy tallied two more RBIs with a single up the middle
* Cami McNany (Emlenton, PA/Allegheny-Clarion Valley) sent three runs in with a double to left field to finish the Lions second inning run
* Behrend scored five more in the fourth inning with RBIs from Maddie Smith (DuBois, PA/DuBois) McIntire, and Olevnik
* Allegheny had a three-run homer in the fifth to get on the board
* Ashleigh Schmidt (Sarver, PA/Freeport) tallied her first win of the season, throwing 42 strikes
