ERIE, Pa. – Four Penn State Behrend women's basketball players scored in double figures to help the Lions defeat Medaille 69-66 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Wednesday evening.
With the victory, Behrend avenged a 69-51 loss earlier this season to the Mavericks.
In a back-and-forth first half, neither team had a lead of more than five during the first 16 minutes. Late in the opening stanza, Medaille started to pull away heading into the break. After four straight free throws, the Mavericks were up by nine with just three minutes to play. The Lions (12-7, 10-4 AMCC) battled back though, ending the half on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to two at halftime.
With the second half underway, the two teams continued to battle. By the 15:00 minute mark, Medaille was up by five, but after a Julia Myers (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) layup, the game was tied for the seventh time.
The turning point of the game came at the 12:03 mark. Myers made another layup, tying the game at 40-all. From there, Behrend went on a 12-4 run to open up an eight-point lead. Holly Bourquin (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) made a layup in between two Brianna Bayly (Imperial, PA/West Allegheny) threes and suddenly the Lions were up by 10 with less than five minutes to play.
Over the final two minutes of the game, Behrend made six clutch free throws to ice the game and earn a huge conference win. The AMCC playoff race became even tighter with the Lions moving to 10-4 in conference play and Medaille falling to 10-3.
Four Behrend players scored in double figures for the third straight game led by Bourquin's 17 points. Myers added 15 points and nine boards. Bayly and Aly Eagle (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley) contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday to host Franciscan at 2 p.m.
