ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's basketball team used a 12-0 run over a three-minute span late in the fourth quarter to defeat Hilbert 59-56 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Monday night.
The Lions (8-8, 6-3 AMCC) erased a 10-point deficit with 5:33 left and took their second lead of the night at the right time, thanks to a steal from Fontaine Glenn (West Sunbury, PA/Moniteau) for the ensuing fast-break layup by Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep). Dani Reinwald's (Clymer, NY/Clymer Central) unconventional three-point play and a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining by Woll secured the comeback conference win.
Woll finished with a team-high 16 points, while Glenn recorded a season-high 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Hawks (8-8, 4-5 AMCC) freshman forward Katelyn Proy led all scorers with 22 points.
After Behrend grabbed a quick 8-4 lead in the first quarter, Hilbert used a 17-2 over the next seven minutes, 18 seconds to take a double-digit lead at 21-10. The Hawks stayed out front and headed into the locker rooms with a comfortable 33-21 advantage.
The Lions managed to get within five points in the third and again at the 8:40 mark in the fourth quarter. Shannon Rogers scored five consecutive points for Hilbert to put the Hawks up 52-42 with 5:33 left to play.
From there, Behrend went on a terror starting with a Reinwald layup followed by a Glenn basket and then a Wolll three-pointer. Sadie Zielinski (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) then drained one from behind the arc on a pass from Woll to knot the game at 52-all.
Woll's layup at 2:10 gave the Lions a 54-52 lead. Proy tied it once again, but Reinwald was fouled while making her layup and connected on the free throw to make it 57-54. Neither team would score a field goal in the final minute, just free throws, finishing with Woll's final two for a three-point victory.
The Lions shot a season-high 40.4 percent from the floor to win by three-points for the fourth time this season. Reinwald pulled down a game-high 11 boards and tied a season best with six steals.
Behrend returns to action on Thursday against D'Youville. Game time is 8 p.m.
