Second-Quarter Surge Lifts Lions Past Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. – Katie Chess (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) posted her second straight double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Penn State Behrend women's basketball team past Penn State Altoona 61-50 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday.

The Lions (6-9, 5-3 AMCC) shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the second quarter to outscore the Altoona Lions (3-9, 3-5 AMCC) 19-9 and erase a four-point deficit to take the lead for good.

Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) and Sadie Zielinski (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the win. Chess' 13 points was a team high and her 15 boards matched her career high.

Megan Wheeler led all scorers with 18 points. She also added 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals for Altoona.

Brittany Boslet helped the Altoona Lions take a slight lead in the first quarter with a triple with 1:22 left to play and then drained another one to start the second quarter for their largest lead at 20-16. Behrend responded with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes for a 25-20 advantage.

The Lions held Altoona to just nine points in the second and third quarter for a 10-point lead heading into the final quarter.

Zielinski made the first two field goals for Behrend in the fourth period, knocking down two threes for a 51-35 lead. A Chess jumper and a Woll pushed it to a 20-point lead at 55-35 with 6:58 showing on the clock.

This marks the second straight game the Lions have held opponents to 50 points or less.

Rachael Razzano (New Castle, PA/New Castle) recorded a career-high seven steals.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday against La Roche. Game time is 6 p.m.
