Women's Basketball Tops Franciscan in AMCC Action

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's basketball team won their sixth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) game with a convincing 66-48 win over Franciscan on Saturday afternoon.

Nine different players scored for the Lions (7-10, 6-4 AMCC) and held a commanding 42-23 advantage on the boards to post their 16th win over the Barons (1-15, 1-9 AMCC) since the all-time series began in 2008-09.

Ali Goetz (Mars, PA/Mars) led the team with 12 points, while Fontaine Glenn (Sunbury, PA/Moniteau), Rachael Razzano (New Castle, PA/New Castle) and Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Merychurst) each added nine points.

For Franciscan, Abby Baierl and Gaby DeJesus tallied 16 points apiece in the loss.

Behrend never trailed in the contest, holding a 22-13 lead after the first quarter. Two free throws by Goetz made it 15-7 with 3:06 left to play in the period but a jumper by Bernadette Roach and then a steal by twin sister Johanna Roach followed by a bucket from Anna Ames got the Barons within four at 15-11.

The Lions took the a nine-point lead into the second quarter and quickly turned it into double digits to stay after the second field goal of the period by Katie Chess (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) at 26-15. Behrend finished the first half with 48.5 percent shooting from the floor and 70 percent from the charity stripe for a 43-24 halftime lead.

Franciscan chipped away at the deficit to get within 11 points in the third quarter, but the Lions defense held up and so did the impressive shooting by the offense to stay ahead and end with an 18-point margin.

Chess and Emily Kinecki (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) each pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, while Woll added five rounds, four assists and two steals to her nine points.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday against D'Youville. Game time is 6 p.m.
