Mt. Aloysius Surges Late To Stop Women's Basketball

CRESSON, Pa. – The Mt. Aloysius women's basketball team erased an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat Penn State Behrend 70-64 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Alexia Servello scored seven of her 10 points over a three-minute span late in the fourth quarter to regain the lead for good and help the Mounties (8-11, 6-6 AMCC) split the regular-season series with the Lions (8-11, 7-5 AMCC).

Jessa Wright, just one of our Mt. Aloysius players in double figures, led all scorers with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Katie Chess (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) paced Behrend with 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting and six rebounds in just 22 minutes of action.

Down by four after the first quarter, the Lions used a 9-0 run to start the second period to take a 26-23 lead. Chess and Fontaine Glenn (Sunbury, PA/Moniteau) exchanged baskets, while Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Merychurst) drained a three to put Behrend in front for the first time since the 6:13 mark of the first quarter.

With 4:06 to go to halftime, the Mounties pulled within three at 31-28 but the Lions went on a 9-1 spurt this time to close out the quarter for an 11-point advantage heading into the final two periods.

Behrend kept a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter until the 1:15 mark when Lea Sammarco knocked in a pair of free throws and then ended the period with a layup to cut the lead to 53-46.

It took a three triples and a pair of jumpers from Kara Cordell to give Mt. Aloysius the lead for good in the fourth quarter with 3:58 remaining in the game. Combined with the efforts from Servello, the Mounties hung on to avenge the loss earlier in the season to the Lions.

Woll and Heidi Langhorst (Corapolis, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) each tallied 12 points. Langhorst also added a team-best eight rebounds. Rachael Razzano (New Castle, PA/New Castle) chipped in seven points and five assists.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday at Medaille. Game time is 6 p.m.
