Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Delaney Arbore registered a game-high 23 points in 20 minutes of work to lead the Allegheny women's basketball team past Penn State Behrend 84-47 in the Greg Richards '08 Memorial Classic, presented by Marquette Savings Bank hosted by Allegheny on Friday night.

Arbore knocked down five of the Gator's (1-0) nine three pointers to help Allegheny take a 43-24 lead at halftime to earn the season-opening victory. For the Lions (0-1), Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) tallied 15 points, six rebounds and five steals while Emily Kinecki (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) added 10 points.

Arbore scored 11 of the 19 first-quarter points to give the Gators a 19-11 lead. Allegheny started with a 10-0 run before letting Behrend get on the board at the 6:24 mark with a Kourtney Beamesderfer (Rebersburg, PA/Penn Valley) jumper. Beamesderfer's basket sparked a 9-2 run for the Lions to cut the lead to 12-9 with 4:18 left.

Allegheny held Behrend to just three points in those final four minutes for an eight-point lead heading into the second quarter. The Gators shot 45.5 percent from the floor in the second quarter to extend their lead to 19 at halftime.

The second half mimicked the first with Allegheny outscoring the Lions 41-23, including 24-13 in the final period.

The Gators had 12 different players score and held a 59-39 advantage on the boards.

Beamesderfer finished with nine points and six boards in her first collegiate start. Brianne Davis (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) matched a team best with six rebounds.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Fredonia for the second game of the Allegheny Tip-Off Tournament at 11 a.m.
