Late Fourth-Quarter Run Lifts Adrian Over Lions

ERIE, Pa. – Shannon Garvey tied a game-high 18 points, knocking down four triples to lead the Adrian women's basketball team past Penn State Behrend 69-64 in non-conference action on Sunday.

The Bulldogs (1-2) held the Lions without a field goal for the last 3:46 of the fourth quarter while going on an 8-1 run to come away with their first win of the season. Ashley Morris added 14 point and seven rebounds for Adrian, while Alyssa Kubik tallied four of her six points in the final three minutes and scored the go-ahead layup with three minutes remaining.

Behrend got a season-best 18 point on 5-for-10 shooting from the field and 8-for-9 from the free-throw line from freshman Autumn Byes (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy). She also added six rebounds and six steals. Erika Woll (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) contributed 17 points, five assists and four steals.

Down 33-23, Woll made a layup at the 3:39 mark that sparked a 13-2 run to give the Lions the lead in the second quarter. Byes scored the next 11 points and made two steals to get Behrend back on top at 36-35. A three pointer by Garvey gave Adrian its first field goal in two minutes, 48 seconds to go up 38-36 with 36 seconds before halftime. Nicole Boyer (Blairsville, PA/Blairsville) drained a jumper with 13 seconds on the clock to even it at 38-all

The third quarter was close to start until Woll hit a triple at 4:12 and Boyer added another two points for a 49-43 lead with 2:31 left. Behrend headed into the fourth quarter with a two-point lead at 51-49. Byes had the unconventional three-point play to start the final 10 minutes for a 54-49 edge.

Kourtney Beamesderfer (Rebersburg, PA/Penns Valley) got a jumper to go for a seven-point lead. The Bulldogs started to make their run, outscoring Behrend 20-8 in the final 8:58. Emily Somerville got the first five points and then Alivia Kondrath made a three pointer for Adrian's first lead of the quarter at 59-58.

Brianne Davis (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) hit her second of a pair of three's for the game and Emily Kinecki (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) followed with a layup to make it 63-61.

The Bulldogs held the Lions to one point in the final 3:24 and held on for their first win. Adrian held a 52-34 advantage on the glass yet lost the turnover battle, 22-13.

Kinecki was the third player in double-digit scoring with 15 points and eight rebounds for Behrend.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday against D'Youville. Game time is 8 p.m.
