ERIE, Pa. – Lindsey Mikula scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute lead Baldwin-Wallace to a 2-1 victory and halt the Lions chance of capturing the Herb Lauffer Memorial Championship in women’s soccer action on Sunday.
Determined by goal differential, the Lions (2-1) came away with the runners-up trophy with a 1-1 record for the weekend. Moravian went undefeated in two games to earn the championship title. Sarah Halpin, goalkeeper for the Greyhounds, earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.
The Yellow Jackets struck first at the 13:13 mark of the opening half when Bucky Gammiere blasted a shot from 15 yards out and into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Glennis Robash was fouled in the box and the Lions were awarded a penalty kick. Julia Schroeck calmly placed the ball past Katie Finley to help Behrend knot the game at 1-all and record her third goal of the tournament.
Neither team would find the back of the net for the next 74 minutes, 38 seconds of the game. The Yellow Jackets held a 6-2 shot advantage in the second half and scored the game winner on the first shot taken in overtime.
Mikula sent a floater shot into the box and Robin Siegenthaler hit the ball to go over the top post, but it fell behind her and into the goal. Siegenthaler and Finley both finished with three saves on the day.
The Lions return to action on Friday against Rochester in the Fredonia Classic on Friday. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
