ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's soccer team recorded two goals in the first half and four more in the second to defeat Hiram 6-0 in the first round of the annual Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament on Saturday.
Julia Schroeck netted back-to-back goals in the opening half to give the Lions (2-0) the early lead that would not relinquish. Goalie Robin Siegenthaler collected her second straight shut out of the season, making two saves in the victory. Caitlyn Elser, Lindsey Steinsdoerfer and Dana Saunders all recorded goals for Behrend.
The Terriers' (1-1) goalkeeper Emily Bristol tallied four saves in the losing effort.
Schroeck scored both her goals in a span of seven minutes with the first tally coming in the 14th minute off a low-driven shot from the left side from 15 yards out. At the 20:18 mark, Valerie Wagner fed Schroeck the ball for her second goal and a 2-0 edge.
In the second half, the Lions kept Bristol busy in the net and outshot Hiram 10-3. Elser recorded her goal off her lone shot of the day in the 52nd minute off an assist from Saunders, who then found the back of the net off a deflection at the 77:57 mark.
Steinsdoerfer made it 5-0 on a pass from Heather Klimuzska, while the Terriers helped Behrend reach 6-0 on an own goal with three minutes showing on the clock.
Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Baldwin-Wallace to determine the champion of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament. Game time is 12 p.m.
