Women's Soccer Opens Season With 2-1 Victory

ROCHESTER, NY – The Penn State Behrend women's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a 2-1 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology in the first round of the Rachel Miller Classic on Friday afternoon.

The Lions (1-0) collected their third straight season-opening win thanks  to goals from Lindsey Steinsdoerfer (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) and Glennis Robash (Mars, PA/Mars). Making her first start in goal, netminder Heather Klimuszka (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) came away with 10 saves to aid in the victory.

Rachael Bromson tallied the lone goal for the Tigers (0-1), who were only able to capitalize on one of 14 shots taken.  Alyssa Henkel made two saves in the loss.

Behrend took the early 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when Erin McCreary (Pittsburgh, PA/Seton-La Salle) found Steinsdoerfer to take a 1-0 lead. The two teams battled for 50 minutes before another goal was scored. In the 77th minute, Robash split three RIT defenders and broke in on Henkel, beating her with a low shot into the right corner.

Rochester managed to cut the lead to 2-1 less than two minutes later off a free kick.  Jaime Lewandowski served a ball from the top of the penalty area and Bromson headed the ball into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

Behrend will face Union in the second round of the tournament tomorrow at 3 p.m.
