Lightning Forces Tie Between Behrend, Grove City

Lightning Forces Tie Between Behrend, Grove City

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's soccer team battled Grove City through 71 minutes before being called by lightning and ending the game in a 1-all tie.

The Lions (4-3-1) got on the scoreboard in the first half on their first corner kick of the game. Tina Pendice (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) took the corner and Sam Vasy (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) was at the right place to head the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Wolverines had their chances to score in opening 45 minutes, firing off nine shots. Grove City did not back down, taking six more shots in the second half and capitalizing on one off a direct kick to even the score.

In the 66th minute, just five minutes before the game was suspended, Michelle Stevens took advantage of a direct kick to knot the game at 1-all.

Robin Siegenthaler (Penns Valley, PA/Penns Valley) started in goal and tallied six saves, while defender Julia Schroeck (Fairview, PA/Fairview) made a team save early in the first half on a shot by Sarah Peachy.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday against La Roche at Family First Sports Park. Game time is 3 p.m.
